The facial feedback hypothesis proposes that your facial expressions can influence your emotional state by sending signals to the brain. This means that consciously making a facial expression, such as smiling, can actually lead to feelings of happiness, while a frown can intensify negative feelings. Research suggests that the muscles and skin in your face provide feedback that helps determine and regulate your emotional experience.

The hypothesis that sensory information provided to the brain from facial muscle movements is a major determinant of intrapsychic feeling states, such as fear, anger, joy, contempt, and so on. This idea was introduced by Charles Darwin and developed by Silvan S. Tomkins and Carroll E. Izard.
